The humanitarian relief community admitted that mistakes have been made when reconstruction has been carried out without professional advice, and highlighted that humanitarian organizations do not know how to access affordable, trustworthy expertise.

Sierra Leone - In the fall of 2006, Paul Fish MRICS of Toronto, Canada took nine months off from his job with the Altus Group to join the Voluntary Service Overseas. He put his professional skills to use as a surveyor in Sierra Leone. Upon his return, the Toronto chapter of RICS held a reception and fundraiser to learn more about Paul's experience. RICS is committed to humanitarian efforts worldwide, most notably in bringing together industry and humanitarian expertise through BuildAction, an organization founded by RICS.

We are pleased to present Neil Hetherington, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Toronto, as our featured speaker. Neil was a volunteer for Habitat when he began his project management career with Tridel Construction. In 2000, Neil made the bold move from corporate sector to join Habitat for Humanity. He is the youngest CEO of a Habitat affiliate worldwide, and has received many honours and awards for his contributions to the community
